Capital punishment for Senators The five or six Senators left in the dressing room lingered at their stalls, some staring blankly at the floor.

Another wasted effort complete with the same old costly mistakes.

In a season that has gone so horribly wrong, the Senators were the victims of their own mistakes Sunday as the Capitals struck for three third-period goals to send Ottawa to a 3-1 loss.

A bad turnover, a dumb penalty and an ugly one on Brian Elliott resulted in goals by Brooks Laich, John Carlson and Jason Chimera. Only Mike Fisher was able to solve Caps goalie Michael Neuvirth.

All this after Ottawa held the lead for 40 minutes.
